More About Michael Dwayne Ermert

Mike has been with Hare, Wynn, Newell & Newton since 1990 when he graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law as one of its most highly decorated students. Mike also attended the University of Alabama as an undergraduate, after which time he spent four years serving the country as an officer in the U.S. Army.

Hailing from Athens, Alabama, Mike is the first member of his family to become a lawyer. Over the course of his career, Mike has become known as one of the state’s leading experts in medical malpractice cases, trying or settling cases with recoveries totaling in the tens of millions of dollars. He also successfully represented individuals, families, and small businesses in a wide variety of litigation ranging from catastrophic tractor-trailer collisions to commercial disputes.
Married to his high school sweetheart for more than 30 years, Michael and his wife have two beautiful daughters. He enjoys Alabama football and spending time at the lake.

To Mike, the most rewarding aspect about the practice of law is the ability to make a true difference in his clients’ lives. This spirit of helping others is evident in his involvement with a number of community organizations. He has served as chair of the board of management for the Downtown Birmingham YMCA, and is a past president of both the Alabama Civil Justice Foundation and the Red Elephant Club of Birmingham. For over a decade, he served on the missions committee at his church, a role which has allowed him to travel to some of the most remote villages in West Africa.

Mike has been professionally active in local, state, and national organizations and has chaired a wide range of Bar committees. He currently is in his second term as a member of the Alabama State Bar Board of Bar Commissioners and is a member of the Jefferson County Judicial Commission. He was elected by his peers to serve on the Birmingham Bar Association Executive Committee from 2006 to 2008 and was a member of the Jefferson County Differential Case Management Committee, which designed the process judges use to move litigation through the 10th Judicial Circuit court system. He has served on the board of directors of the Birmingham Bar Foundation and is a past president. He also is a past president of the Alabama Association for Justice and served on the editorial board for the journal published by that association.

A sought-after speaker, Mike has presented at numerous continuing legal education seminars across the state and around the southeast. He has been inducted into the American Board of Trial Advocates and currently serves as the immediate past president of the Alabama chapter.
