More About Charles Pelkey

Charles is a 2009 graduate of the University of Wyoming College of Law. He is a member of the Wyoming Bar and is admitted to practice in the federal courts of Wyoming. His primary legal interests are criminal law, family law, employment law, personal injury and sports law.

Charles came to the practice of law as a second career, after having spent 25 years in journalism, including time as a news reporter for Wyoming Public Radio and later as a staff writer for the Casper Star Tribune, covering education and Wyoming politics. He served as press secretary for then-U.S. Senator Alan K. Simpson, before taking an editorial position at the cycling magazine VeloNews in 1994. During his 17-year career at the magazine, Charles covered the top levels of the sport, including the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España.

He also spent several years investigating the problems of performance-enhancing drugs in sport and is regarded as an expert in the field. Charles reported on and followed the evolution of the body of law involving the World Anti-Doping Agency and the World Anti-Doping Code and attended both the agency’s founding conference in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1999 and its most recent, the 2007 conference in Madrid. Charles has frequently appeared as a guest on major news outlets including NPR, the BBC, MSNBC, ESPN and CBS, to discuss the topic in general and how the law applies to individual cases.

Charles is dedicated to promoting and protecting the rights of cyclists across Wyoming and beyond, representing bicycle riders of all kinds. A long-time cyclist, former Category 2 road racer and expert mountain-bike competitor, Charles is an advocate for bicycle safety and bicycle rights on the roads and in court. He is the author of seven books and editor of several others, including “Bicycling and the Law,” by Portland attorney Bob Mionske. @ Charles lives in Laramie with his wife Diana Denison and their two children, Philip and Annika.
